The harmonium was developed in Europe in the 19th century and quickly found its place in churches and salons. During the colonial era, it made its way to India, where it was redesigned: instead of foot pedals, it is played with a hand bellows—ideal for the traditional sitting position on the floor. Thus, the harmonium became an integral part of Indian music, especially for accompanying singing and mantras.
