
Whether a princess, noblewoman or citizen in one of the trading towns - in the early modern period, wives were always also their husbands' deputies, but only in their absence. They were then able to make decisions for the country or the workshop within a set framework. Without their help, their skill and their cleverness in dealing with people and money, many men would have fallen by the wayside.
