„Now what belongs together will grow together.“ The quote by Willy Brandt from 10 November 1989, the day after the fall of the Berlin Wall, has become a famous catchphrase to describe the process of German reunification. Less than a year later, on 3 October 1990, the former chancellor stood next to Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher on the podium at the midnight celebration in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin. With tears in his eyes, he witnessed the realization of German reunification.
