Born in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) in 1984, filmmaker Jan Soldat spent his first few years in the GDR. After civilian service at Chemnitz Hospital he took up studies in mathematical economics and later shifted to mechanical engineering, to give up both in order to make films.
