The Trickster Orchestra has researched trans-traditional music practice with guests from the fields of music, science, and society over a period of two years. In its fifth and final “Encounter” of the trans-traditional music laboratory, the ensemble explores the role of extended playing techniques. If instruments in global ensembles are to unite through a combined language, they need to be taken beyond their normal sound spaces. By unlearning conventional ways of playing and liquefying musical identities, a trans-traditionally transformed contemporaneity is created. How are sonic borders shifted in trans-traditional music? How can trusted techniques be expanded, how can an instrument be conceived as mutable material? And which new forms of listening and playing together arise when playing techniques themselves become the subject of musical transformation? The Trickster Orchestra’s trans-traditional music laboratory is a public, experimental and interactive working process. The audience is invited to pose questions, make observations, or simply just listen in an informal setting. The series culminates in the TransTraditionale festival, which presents outstanding ensembles and soloists from the trans-traditional music scene from 24 - 26 April 2026 at Radialsystem.
