
The island, known as Kaninchenwerder, had a special attraction for the Prussian King Frederick William II. in 1793, he decided to take over the island. In line with Rousseau's motto "back to nature", the king wanted to create a paradisiacal retreat here. It was then given the name "Royal Peacock Island".
