The cantata BWV 20 was composed in 1724, with which J.S. Bach began his second year in Leipzig. It is based on Johann Rist's hymn (1642), which interprets the parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus (Luke 16). With his music, Bach calls for "drastic repentance and renunciation of the world."
