The nuanced portrayal of the internal conflicts of GDR society, the effects of the division of Germany on its characters, the open treatment of the subject of escape from the Republic, and the unique stylistic execution of the film were highly praised in the period before the 11th Plenum. Afterward, some of these very aspects were criticized and censored. The film was not allowed to be shown on GDR television until 1982.
