For more than a year, Matthias Engler and Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir endeavored to reconstruct a lost piece of music—Vis-à-Vis, composed jointly by John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, and the performance duo THE. The theater piece, in which they retrace their quest, uses documentary techniques to take us on a journey back in time to a September evening in 1986 in San Diego, California.
