Ines Burdow extracts the main character, the opportunist Diederich Heßling, from Heinrich Mann's novel *Der Untertan* and lets him speak for himself – to himself, the emperor, God, and the world. He recounts his journey: from a tranquil small town, which we'll call S., in the Berlin suburbs, he makes it to the extravagant capital and, after his studies and his father's death, back to his small town.
