In early 16th-century Europe, Anne of Brittany (1477–1514) was a remarkable figure. As duchess, she not only preserved her homeland’s independence through skillful political maneuvering. She also was a major supporter of art, science, and the novel technology of printing, gathering many highly educated women at her court, which was unique in its time.
