C/O Berlin Talent Award 2025 In his first institutional exhibition in Germany, Finland-based artist researcher Sheung Yiu (b. 1991, HKG) explores how faces have been used across cultures and technologies to predict character traits and futures. His work invites us to critically reflect on our trust in spiritual, scientific, and algorithmic “objective gazes.”Join the tour with Megan Williams,Theorist, and Sheung Yiu,Artist—both recipients of the C/O Berlin Talent Award—as they delve into the fascinating interplay between technology and spiritual or folkloric practices, including concepts such as techno-paganism. The discussion highlights the looping and recursive patterns that have shaped facial reading logics throughout history, from traditional East Asian face reading and Western physiognomy to cutting-edge facial recognition technologies. At the heart of the tour are the power dynamics embedded in predictive modeling and computer vision, and how these complex themes converge in Sheung Yiu’s exhibition(Inter)faces of Predictions.Sheung Yiu(b. 1991, HKG/FI) is an image-centered artist and researcher based in Helsinki. His artwork explores imaging practices emerging at the intersection of photography and large-scale computation. At the moment, he is looking at the history of face reading and facial recognition in order to understand how photographs become predictions.Megan Williams(b. 1995, UK) is an arts writer, editor, and researcher based in London. Her writing has been published byGuardian,Elephant,CNN, andCreative Review, where she was a member of the editorial team between 2019 and 2025.
