
For 40 years, the Stasi secured the rule of the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED). In its "fight against the enemy," the Ministry for State Security (Stasi) expanded ever further, both in Lichtenberg and throughout East Germany. In 1990, courageous citizens not only saved the secret police's files from destruction, but also reclaimed Mielke's headquarters as a public space.
